Alouettes vs. Tiger-Cats picks and odds: Bet on Hamilton to take care of business at home

The Montreal Alouettes and Hamilton Tiger-Cats are this week’s dose of Thursday night CFL action.

The pregame narrative: The Ti-Cats look to shake off a disastrous start by besting the Alouettes at home in what should be a low-scoring affair at Tim Hortons Field.

Here are our Alouettes vs. Tiger-Cats picks for July 28.

Alouettes vs. Tiger-Cats picks overview

  • Tiger-Cats -3 (-114)
  • Under 49 points (-114)
  • Tiger-Cats ML + Under 49 points (+205)

Alouettes vs. Tiger-Cats picks

Best bet: Tiger-Cats -3 (-114)

After making it to the Gray Cup last season, the Tiger-Cats’ 2022 campaign has been nothing short of a nightmare thus far.

Orlondo Steinauer’s squad has dropped five of their first six games and has a -41 points differential.

That being said, Hamilton somehow has the opportunity to pull even with Montreal in the Eastern Standings with a win on Thursday (at least in the record department).

The Als sit at 2-4 with wins over the league-worst Ottawa Redblacks as well as the Saskatchewan Roughriders. Statistically, they’ve been a better team than Hamilton, but we think this matchup favours the home team.

Trevor Harris has taken the reigns under center for Montreal in the wake of Vernon Adams’ injury, and has put up somewhat respectable numbers.

Player Starts Yards Completions-Attempts TD INT
Trevor Harris 5 1312 96-135 5 5

However, four of those five touchdown passes have come in the last two weeks against the Edmonton Elks and Redblacks (two apiece). One could construe this as Harris getting hot, we believe he was just beating up on the two worst secondaries in the CFL.

Hamilton may be 1-5 but it’s not due to the defence. Steinauer’s secondary has given up the second-fewest TDs in the league (seven) to go along with the third-lowest completion percentage (65.6%).

Against teams not named the Redblacks or Elks, Harris has just one touchdown to three interceptions.

We think Hamilton’s defense shows up and stifles Montreal while finally having a breakout performance offensively. Let’s roll with the home team as 3-point favorites

Key stat: Hamilton has covered this number in two of its last three games against Montreal.

Quick picks

Under 49 points (-114): Hamilton has gone under this total in three of its last four contests. The Alouettes have been scoring points, but as mentioned above we think they’ll take a step back this week against a Ti-Cats defence that is better than the numbers indicate.

Tiger-Cats ML + Under 49.5 (+210): If you’re looking to get a little frisky this parlay combines both the under with the Ti-Cats ML at plus-money odds. We’re confident Hamilton will handle its business in a low-scoring fashion, and in this bet you won’t have to worry about them winning by three-plus points.
