CHENEY — The Hutchinson Bats led the Cheney Diamond Dawgs for the fourth consecutive game Friday. Co-league leader Cheney roared past the Bat Cats 9-4 to split the 4-game Sunflower Collegiate League baseball series. The game was delayed when umpires arrived 40 minutes after the scheduled start.

Cheney (26-6) and Hutchinson (26-6) are tied for first with Great Bend (26-11, 22-10) 11/2 games ahead of Newton (20-11).

The Bat Cats enjoyed a promising start when JoJo Nieves scored on Colby Christian’s first-inning single.

But the Bat Cats fell apart when two errors contributed to five unearned runs. Five Cheney baserunners scored after reaching base on an error, walk or hit by pitch.

Bat Cats starter Payton Tinkler (0-2) was tagged for seven runs. An error by third baseman Colter Maldanado led to a 5-run second inning. Gavin Rogers, Cole Miears and Lenny Ashby delivered RBIs. Connor Myles and Rogers drove home runs in the third inning for a 7-1 lead. Cheney’s Ryan Scott tripled home Jason Syring and Ashby in the sixth inning for a 9-2 lead.

The Bat Cats scored single runs in the sixth, eighth and ninth innings. Nieves scored on a sixth-inning double play. Alex Rodgers scored on a Zane Spinn eighth-inning RBI single. Raithen Malone scored on Maldanado’s ninth-inning groundout.

Cheney showcased top-notch defense. The Diamond Dawgs turned a sixth-inning double play. Right fielder Ryan Scott threw out Simon Larranaga at third base. Centerfielder Miears stole a home run on Alex Rodgers’ deep fly ball in the third inning.
