Furry Friday: Cats in winter

Last week I gave you a collection of dogs taking joy in being wet and mucky – a common experience for them in winter.

But what about our cats? They are not noted for being mudlarks or waterbabies, yet they can’t outrun the rain or completely evade the atmospheric moistness that comes with these midyear months. Even cats get wet, in other words.

So today’s collection records the seasonal wetness of cats, but it also recognises their more common winter behaviours, notably involving heat sources. It’s an all-round Winter Cats collection. Scroll and enjoy!

Cookie walks in snow for the first time. Imagine the rush of sensations – the wadded crunch, the chill, the softness. For a creature as sense-led as a cat, snow must be an overwhelming experience.

Water is no worry for Karma – she strolls happily through it. Unlike a former cat of mine, who used to kick out his front paws like a cancan dancer anytime they got wet.

A flashback to 2011, that time snow fell across much of New Zealand. Gwen took her first walk in the stuff, savoring its feel, scent and smell.

Here's the very same Harlow on a different occasion, namely that time the edge of the spa pool turned out not to be safe for walking.

Someone made a 'snowball' with hail, so George had to follow up with a taste test. I'm told George possesses a short, bent tail that he wags rather than flicks.

Avoiding, and recovering from, wetness is part of a cat's winter experience. But so is the discovery of dry, warm places. Here Phoebe (left) colonises a willing lap and George occupies a sun-drenched sill.
