Salem dog attack leaves one pet dead, another seriously injured


One dog is dead and another is seriously injured after they were attacked by dogs that got loose in Salem, Massachusetts.Bill McGunigle said he and his 6-year-old Chihuahua, Guillermo, were outside on Boston Street at about 7:30 a.m. Saturday when he noticed two pit bulls down the street.”They were far enough away and they seemed to have gotten herded into a yard, so I kind of relaxed a little thinking they were under control,” McGunigle said.But McGunigle said things quickly changed and that the pit bulls attacked his 2-pound Chihuahua.”Two seconds later, my dog ​​was getting tossed in the air like a rag doll,” he said.McGunigle said he moved in fast to try and break up the dog fight, leaving him with cuts to his hands and feet.Unfortunately, Guillermo suffered several broken ribs and is heavily bandaged up.”It was horrifying, horrifying. It was the most surreal thing I’ve ever seen in my life,” McGunigle said. “I’m just going to sit with him all weekend, take him back to the (veterinarian) on Tuesday and hope for the best.” Neighbor Nancy Santos said she stepped in to help McGunigle and Guillermo.”As I came out the door , (the pit bulls) came right at me and I just looked at them and I was like: ‘Go on! Get going!”” Santos said.Salem Animal Control said at least one of the pit bulls went on to attack another dog , a terrier named Blitzen, that ultimately died of her injuries.Neighbors told NewsCenter 5 that neither of the pit bulls were on leashes when they saw Guillermo being attacked. The exact circumstances of the incident remain under investigation by Salem Animal Control.
