A Louisville couple and their dogs were comfortable in their previous home — but they just wanted more land.
“I told my husband I wanted some acreage for our dogs,” the homeowner, who asked not to be named, told The Courier Journal. “We looked at 100 acres, we looked at 60 acres, we looked at everything — acreage everywhere, from Shelbyville to Louisville.”
One day, she was driving down a street and saw a for sale sign in front of a 5,000-square-foot, traditional-style home in east Louisville that had just enough land. Soon enough, she and her husband were moving in, and about three years ago, they decided it was time for a renovation.
“We really concentrated on being able to see from through (from the front to the back), like a southern house,” she said of the remodel.
Enlisting expert help
The homeowner and her husband knew just who to call, as they had hired Karen McKechnie and the rest of the Stonehenge Construction team to renovate their previous home. In addition to reconfiguring the space for a clean view, the homeowners also worked with McKechnie to move the laundry room to the second floor, convert the attic into a main suite, and add an elevator, among other changes.
“I (also) told Karen we’ve got to have a screened-in porch,” the homeowner said. “And it just turned out outstanding. Better than I ever thought it would.”
What used to be just a deck is now a large screened-in porch that boasts a fireplace, a flat-screen TV, and a view out toward the massive yard and a fence lined with Norway Spruce trees. It also features a railing that McKechnie designed specifically to prevent the homeowners’ three dogs from breaking through the screen.

Designing for the dogs
In addition to the special canine considerations taken for the screened-in porch, the homeowners also tasked Stonehenge Construction with creating a specific indoor area for the dogs to call their own.
“I wanted an area for the dogs in the house where they felt comfortable when we are away from home,” the homeowner explained. “(It’s) their area and they’re very happy here.”
Dubbed the “dog room,” the space features a dog bath, a human powder room with dog décor, and a pocket-style half door that leads into the kitchen.
“I (had) to have something here so the dogs can see what’s going on,” the homeowner said of the door. “Originally, we were going to do a Dutch door… and Karen found a picture of (something like this, and it) was perfect. She designed this, and it is just absolutely wonderful.”
The homeowners also insisted on having a fenced-in area just outside the back door so the dogs can rest, run, and do their business in a safe space without roaming the entire five-acre property.

Favorite family features
When the dogs walk out of the family room to their fenced-in outdoor area, they also have access to the homeowners’ barn, which is just a stone’s throw away.
“It’s really a glorified garage,” the homeowner said with a laugh. “Half of it is mine, and half of it is (my husband’s).”
The red and black building, complete with a weathervane up top and barn-style doors, truly looks like a real barn, but half the space is filled with woodworking tools while the other part is set up for dog training.
“The barn is what we love so much,” the homeowner said, adding that prior to purchasing this property, she and her husband had been talking about building a barn at their previous house. The land there, however, was not conducive to constructing such a structure. The lot around their new home turned out to be perfect.
“It really turned out to be the place where we can do what we love,” the homeowner said, “and (we’re) in a wonderful neighborhood.”
