This Cat Was Found With a Terrible Case of Mange. Look How Grateful He is For His Rescuers!

Cats of San Bernadino, a nonprofit rescue organization, were on their way home after a long day of colony feeding when they drove past a 9-year-old cat who was all alone and in really bad shape. It was obvious to them that he was in distress and needed immediate medical attention. When they stopped and got out of the car to take a closer look, they realized that his mange was worse than they thought and he had other injuries all over his body. Despite his terrible condition, he was surprisingly friendly and greeted them with loving nudges.

To everyone’s surprise, this brave cat let them gently pick him up and put him in the travel carrier. He was so desperate for help and didn’t have the strength to put up a fight.

In an update video, Oceanus had a visit to the vet for a general checkup, where he was neutered, received bloodwork, and had a fecal exam. They have already started his mange, but unfortunately, treating it will take a while for it to completely clear up. β€œWe weren’t sure what his demeanor would be like, but he is extremely sweet and very vocal,” his rescuers said in a TikTok video.

@catsofsanbernardino Oceanus Update!Big boy is heading into the vet today 😁 He is going to be getting neutered, bloodwork, and a fecal exam. Poor little dude has pretty bad diarrhea. We have already started treating his mange but it will take awhile for it to clear up. We weren’t sure what his demeanor would be like, but he is extremely sweet, and very vocal. We will keep everyone posted on what we find out at the Vet today πŸ€— #catsoftiktok #ItsGreatOutdoors ♬ original sound – catsofsanbernardino

Since Oceanus has mange all over his body, it will take him extra time to fully heal. Mange is caused by parasites called mites that bite an animal’s skin and can cause symptoms such as itching, flaking, hair loss, and inflammation. Mange is treated over several weeks with medication designed to kill the mites.

β€œHis mange has been treated and his fecal test came back Negative. His diarrhea is improving.. his system might have had a bit of shock in response to his new level of nutritional intake. He has an abscess that is forming on his front right arm. He is going to go back to the vet tomorrow to have that lanced and drained,” his rescuers reported.

We will also be getting some bloodwork done which they didn’t have time to perform last week. We will have another update on him coming after we get some updates from the vet tomorrow. Wish him luck. He is a bit better but still has a lot going on.♬ original sound – catsofsanbernardino

β€œOur baby boy got some not-so-great news at the vet. His bloodwork is pretty out of wake and he has some liver elevations. Most of these issues are likely due to his deteriorating condition on the streets. He is extremely malnourished, fighting mange, and had various wounds throughout his body. The large abscess on his arm was drained and sutured closed but there is a risk he could become septic,” they added.

According to national estimates, approximately 6.3 million companion animals are abandoned and enter US animal shelters nationwide every year. Of those, approximately 3.1 million are dogs, and 3.2 million are cats. In the US alone, over 5.4 million cats are killed on the side of the road. If you happen to notice a cat on the side of the road, whether or not the animal is injured, safely put on the hazard lights and pull your car completely off the road before attempting to rescue them, says the Humane Society.
