Developed by Dennis Lehane, the American crime drama is based on the 2010 autobiographical novel In With The Devil: A Fallen Hero, A Serial Killer, And A Dangerous Bargain For Redemption. It was written by James Keene and Hillel Levin.
Since diving into the six-episode miniseries that began premiering in July on Apple TV+, some have become curious about the real-life people that inspired the source material.
So, let’s take the time to dive behind the scenes. Who is Larry Hall in Black Bird?
Who is Larry Hall in Black Bird?
Full name Larry Dewayne Hall, he was born on December 11, 1962 as a twin. Fast forward to later in life and the Belleville News-Democrat reports he lived in an Indiana cemetery.
The Cinemaholic highlights he dug graves there from a young age to help his father out and was a rather strange child. However, things began to pick up socially when he participated in Civil War and Revolutionary War re-enactments after high school.
He went on to travel across the Midwest in a van and his travels led to the authorities identifying him as a suspect in the disappearance and potential murder of up to 40 young females.
The Cinemaholic reports these cases spanned numerous states between 1980 and 1994. Working as a janitor, he eventually came under suspicion because there were reports of a man attempting to pick young girls up in a van that related to a case.
This was the case of teenager Jessica Roach but, when Hall was shown her picture, he claimed he’d never seen her before. She vanished in 1993.
Where is Larry Hall now?
Larry Hall confessed to raping and murdering Jessica Roach only to recant his statement the following day, reports The Cinemaholic. His confession had also extended to him claiming he had hurt other women.
Despite his attempts to recant, evidence found in his van ultimately led to his arrest and he was later found guilty of abducting Roach because his knowledge of the crime suggested involvement.
Handed a life term without parole, he didn’t appeal until roughly 1996. Hall is now 59 years old and remains incarcerated at the all-male Federal Correctional Institution Butner Medium II in North Carolina.
The Cinemaholic reports that, during his time there, he has confessed to multiple murders only to recant them yet again.
Who plays Larry Hall in the series?
The role is tackled by Paul Walter Hauser.
Looking back, the 35-year-old American actor has impressed in such movies as I, Tonya, Richard Jewell, Da 5 Bloods, and Cruella.
On the other hand, some audiences may know him best as Stingray in Netflix series Cobra Kai.
Black Bird is streaming exclusively on Apple TV+.
